What is FM200 extinguishing agent and what is it used for?
FM200 is a colorless gas that is stored liquefied under pressure. It is similar to Halon 1301, has a low level of toxicity and is stored under nitrogen pressure up to 24.8 bar. FM200 quickly extinguishes fires using a combination of chemical and physical mechanisms. It is also known as HFC227EA.
- Does not cause destruction of the ozone layer
- Safe for use in residential areas
- Suitable for high risk areas
- Existing halon/CO2 control systems can be adapted for use with the FM200
- Requires minimal storage space
- Like halon, it does not require cleanup after disposal
- Uses a low-pressure system
- Listed on the US Environmental Protection Agency
FM200 does not contain bromine or chlorine and has no ozone-depleting potential (ODP). The atmospheric life of FM200 is between 31 and 42 years, which, together with zero ODP, represents a long-term fire protection solution.
How safe is the FM200?
FM200 has been found to be less toxic than Halon 1301, making it safe for use in fully automatic mode among humans. A design concentration of 7% is typically required for FM200, which is significantly lower than the 9% level with no observed adverse effects. FM200 is also used as an active ingredient (propellant) in medical inhalers. In conclusion, FM200 is extremely safe for human-occupied spaces at the correct concentrations and fire extinguishing design.
How does the FM200 work?
It is wrong to think that FM200 reduces oxygen. FM200 is a synthetic/chemical fire extinguishing gas that extinguishes fires by removing free radicals or heat elements from the fire triangle (oxygen, heat and fuel).
A typical system concentration with FM200 is usually between 7.9% and 8.5%. This concentration is determined by the risk being protected and complies with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards and the ISO 14520 standard for fire extinguishing systems.
What are the advantages of the FM200 fire extinguishing system?
The main advantage of the FM200 fire extinguisher is the small amount of agent required to extinguish a fire. This means fewer bottles, therefore less wasted FM200 bottle storage space. FM200 systems reach extinguishment levels in 10 seconds or less, stopping common combustible, electrical and flammable liquids before they cause significant damage. The FM200 extinguishes the fire quickly, which means less damage, lower repair costs. Like any other fire extinguishing system , FM200 systems are designed with an extra margin of safety for people. Recharging the FM200 is easy and cost effective, therefore also means less downtime and disruption to your business.
Where is it suitable for?
FM200 is a suitable agent for human-occupied spaces. FM200 fire extinguishing systems are typically used in:
- Data centers
- Communication rooms
- Telecommunications facilities
- UPS rooms
- Medical institutions
